Imagine yourself as a 20 year old young man sitting on a bench at a park on Monday morning, you are practically homeless because your mom says, “She can’t take care of a worthless grown man any longer.” You can’t sit too long on this park bench because of rival neighborhoods. As you ponder on what you should do, you are dispirited on the lack of options. You’re a high school dropout because the classrooms in your urban school were a playground and it became a disruption and you found it useless to continue on. The only thing good you have is a girlfriend who is going off to college and you’re feeling unworthy. All real employment requires transportation. You don’t even have a driver’s license, much less, a car. You’ve never had a real male role model nor have you been really taught how to use tools or gain any handy skills. Frustrated and feeling trapped, hoping you don’t explode on somebody and end back in jail. You see a flyer on a telephone pole. It persuades you to register for a local green job training program. Your excitement rises when you read that they encourage disenfranchised youth from the community to apply. On the first day of work, you feel relieved that your supervisor is someone whom you can relate to you and is willing to work with your weaknesses and praise your strengths, provides transportation and helps with your G.E.D. and helps you get certified in green certification programs. You’re surrounded by peers who share the same exact experiences as you. You take a deep breath and release your anxiety and think to yourself, you have entered adulthood. Thank God for Sport4Life!
